Christine LaGrone, a realtor living in the Casa View neighborhood of Dallas, took her frustration with the child welfare system and channeled it into action by becoming a Dallas CASA volunteer. A realtor by profession, LaGrone hoped to find a way to give back.
Instead, she found her calling.
What brought you to Dallas CASA?
During the pandemic, like everybody, I was home and looking for things to do. I watched the Netflix show “The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez.” I could not believe my eyes that such terrible things could happen to a child and that no one stepped in to help. I ended up watching it twice all the way through, and I knew I had to do something. That’s when I found Dallas CASA.
What special skills did you bring to the role of child advocate?
Honestly, apart from caring about these children, not much! Through training and the incredible support of my supervisor, I have been able to do everything well.
How long do you plan to volunteer?
For as long as I can! As soon as my first case wrapped up, I was ready to take another. My volunteering has easily integrated into my work schedule, and it feels natural. Being a CASA volunteer is part of who I am now.
What’s your main takeaway?
I had no idea my impact could be so great, but mostly I had no idea how much of an impact it would make on my own life! I am really helping, and that’s just so empowering and brings me so much joy.
